What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

Our dental hygienist is specifically trained in order to assist you to keep your teeth clean and your gums healthy.  Bacterial plaque if not adequately removed with brushing and flossing can cause gum inflammation (gingivitis) and decay.  If this inflammation spreads below the gum line, this may lead to periodontal disease- an infection and inflammation of the ligaments and bone supporting the teeth.  One of the first signs of gum inflammation is bleeding.  Gum bleeding is not normal.

The bacteria involved in periodontal disease are easily able to enter the blood stream and are also linked with many common illnesses affecting the rest of the body.  Recent research has linked periodontal disease with Heart Disease, Stroke and Diabetes.  This list continues to grow as the mouth really is a portal to the rest of the body and research continues into the relationship between the mouth health and the health of the whole body.

Most people are unaware they have periodontal disease as it is a silent, chronic condition.  Periodontal disease is however, our most common preventable disease in adults in New Zealand.  It is a condition which may lead to the loss of one, or many teeth and in its acute phase, can cause a great deal of pain.  If you are feeling concerned about your gum health or gum condition, or need advice about your oral health, get in touch!
